Tutorials:Install Metamask
MetaMask is a self-custodial crypto wallet (browser extension and mobile app) built by ConsenSys. It lets you hold and use Ethereum and other EVM-chain assets, and it connects you to dApps by asking you to approve transactions and signatures from inside the wallet.
MetaMask does not store your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys (it encrypts them locally on your device), and it “reaches” different blockchains through network infrastructure called RPC endpoints (JSON-RPC servers).
By default MetaMask uses Infura for blockchain connectivity, but you can add/switch networks by entering different custom RPC URLs (including your own node or another provider).
How to Install MetaMask
1. Go to the official MetaMask site Visit metamask.io/download to ensure you're downloading from a trusted source.
2. Download MetaMask
- Desktop: Click "Install MetaMask for [Browser Name]" (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge).
- Mobile: Tap "Download for iOS" or "Download for Android" based on your device.
3. Install and Open MetaMask
- Follow your device's instructions to install the app or browser extension.
- Open the app or click the MetaMask icon in your browser.
4. Set Up MetaMask
- Tap "Get Started" and choose "Create a Wallet".
- Create a strong password:
This password will protect the wallet in the device where you are installing it. Not to be confused with the 12 word recovery phrase, or wallet seed that can be used to generate all your private keys.
- Write down the Secret Recovery Phrase and store it safely (offline):
This is the same as the wallet seed we talked about and consists of 12 words, and it is the only thing you actually have. If you lose that, you lose everything and can't be recovered.
5. Confirm Setup
- Complete the recovery phrase confirmation.
- MetaMask is now ready to use!
Remember: The most important thing is to keep the 12 words in a safe place.
Metamask User's Guide
Metamask let's you connect to many networks, which you can select in the networks tab in the upper left.
In MetaMask, your wallet can contain multiple accounts. Each account is like a separate “profile” inside the same wallet:
it has its own public address (what you share to receive funds) and its own balance and activity, but all the accounts are controlled by the same wallet recovery phrase.
A typical MetaMask account address looks like this (example format):
0x3F1a2B9cD4eE5F67890123456789aBCdEf012345
Ethereum-style addresses start with 0x and are 40 hex characters long after that. MetaMask often shows it in a shortened form in the app, like:
0x3F1a…2345
Metamask Functions:
- Buy: Takes you to the app.metamask.io website.
- Swap: Use it to trade tokens using Metamask network. NOT Uniswap DEXand to send assets from one blockchain to another using "bridge" technology.
- Send:Sends from one address to another.
- Receive: Gives your address and QR version for sharing.
