Quest: Install Electrum Wallet
Electrum is a lightweight and secure Bitcoin wallet that allows you to store and manage your cryptocurrency keys. This guide will help you download, install, and secure your wallet.
Step 1: Download Electrum
- Visit the official Electrum website: https://electrum.org/
* Important: Only download Electrum from its official website to avoid malicious software.
- Choose the version appropriate for your device:
* For Windows, macOS, or Linux: Download the desktop version. * For Android: Use the official app from the Google Play Store: Electrum on Google Play.
The desktop verision will store the wallet files in this address:
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets
That is why it is a good idea to protect them with a password.Note: The AppData folder or equivalent is not visible, you have to enable view hidden files, or get to it directly with the Terminal.
The Portable or "stand alone" version will save the wallet files in the same directory where the executable is running. This may be useful if you want to use Electrum in a public computer, so you can delete all files after you finish.
Step 2: Install Electrum
- Follow the installation instructions for your operating system.
- Once installed, open Electrum.
- Select: Create New Wallet.
- Give it a name and click "next" to create the wallet.
- Create new Standard Wallet and click "next"
- Select: Create a new seed
- Your wallet "seed" will be revealed, it is a list of 12 words in a particular order.
- Choose a password to encrypt your wallet keys.
Step 3: Secure Your Wallet Seed
- Under the Wallet tab, click on Seed to reveal your wallet seed. You will be asked for your password. (unless you choose to skip encryption)
* The wallet seed is a unique list of 12 words that acts as the master key to your Bitcoin funds. * Note: You don’t actually "have" Bitcoin in the wallet, what you have are the cryptographic keys that allow you to move Bitcoin on the blockchain.
Understand the importance of your seed:
* If you lose your wallet seed, you lose access to your Bitcoin permanently. * Anyone with your seed can access your funds.
Task: Back Up Your Wallet Seed
1) Write down the 12 words in the correct order on a piece of paper.
Do not save the seed digitally (e.g., screenshots, cloud storage) to avoid hacking risks.
2) Store the paper in a secure and memorable location.
We can't ask you to reveal your seed for this quest, so it is up to you to back up your seed.
